Recently, Boeing™ released a study regarding the effectiveness of Ionization system technology as an indoor air quality (IAQ) solution. Building specifiers, including architects, engineers, and air quality leaders, have come to learn via the Boeing™ study that claims about ionizers could not be replicated. Building specifiers have been left looking for an alternate solution that can destroy indoor air pathogens and, most importantly, has legitimate and proven efficacy results.

Let’s compare how ionization system technology and Pyure’s UV-C hydroxyl technology work.

Ionization systems release charged ions. The ions attach themselves to oppositely charged particles in the air. They attempt to attract allergy and bacteria-carrying ions, clump them (or agglomerate in ionizer parlance) together, so they are heavy enough to fall out of the air. These clusters either fall to any surface or become large enough to be trapped in the building’s mechanical filtration system. This process means that the air containing these glommed together ions needs to make it back through the HVAC to become trapped in the filters.

Pyure UV-C hydroxyl technology does purify the air passing through our systems but does not rely on air to pass through its active chamber or to be effective. Pyure Technology® is activated when its specialized UV light reacts with water in the air triggering a constant chain reaction in any occupied or unoccupied space. Why does this make the Pyure system superior to an ionization system?

Pyure Dynamic Protection® is superior to ionization in several ways. The most significant difference is treating both air and surfaces. As the Boeing™ study has pointed out, the surface treatment of ionizers is where the results differed greatly. Pyure systems treat both air and surfaces and have third-party labs’ test data to prove that Pyure eliminates virus and bacteria on surfaces in large spaces in under an hour.

Some ionizer companies have used small test chambers to garner the efficacy results they seek. When an ionization system is tested in a 1-square-foot space, an unrealistic effect is created with high concentrations of ions – often 50 to 100 times higher than in a full-sized room. The size of this testing area does not account for real-world conditions such as in a room. When testing is conducted in a real-world size test chamber, actual efficacy results are revealed. Adding to the problem is that testing is often performed on a surrogate virus and not the actual virus you’re concerned about, such as SARS-CoV-2.
