Recently, Boeing™ released a study regarding the effectiveness of Needlepoint Bipolar Ionization system technology as an indoor air quality (IAQ) solution as they attempted to validate the efficacy claims made by the manufacturer. Building specifiers, including architects, engineers, and air quality leaders, have come to learn via the Boeing™ study that claims about point ionizers manufactured by Global Plasma Solutions could not be replicated. Building specifiers have been left looking for an alternate solution that can destroy indoor air pathogens and, most importantly, has legitimate and proven efficacy results.

Let’s compare how ionization system technology and Pyure’s UV-C hydroxyl technology work.

Ionization systems release charged ions. The ions attach themselves to oppositely charged particles in the air. They attempt to attract allergy and bacteria-carrying ions, clump them (or agglomerate in ionizer parlance) together, so they are heavy enough to fall out of the air. These clusters either fall to any surface or become large enough to be trapped in the building’s mechanical filtration system. This process means that the air containing these glommed together ions needs to make it back through the HVAC to become trapped in the filters.

Pyure UV-C hydroxyl technology does purify the air passing through our systems but does not rely on air to pass through its active chamber or to be effective. Pyure Technology® is activated when its specialized UV light reacts with water in the air triggering a constant chain reaction in any occupied or unoccupied space. The UV and water create hydroxyls and oxidants that seek and destroy pathogens by pulling them apart, effectively rendering them unable to replicate. The air does not have to pass back through the Pyure air purifier. While the Pyure Dynamic Protection® is active, this process continuously occurs in the room(s) or process you’re treating. The result is that all air is constantly treated. See more on how Pyure works.
How Pyure works

Why does this make the Pyure system superior to an ionization system?

Pyure Dynamic Protection® is superior to ionization in several ways. The most significant difference is treating both air and surfaces. As the Boeing™ study has pointed out, the surface treatment of ionizers is where the results differed greatly. Pyure systems treat both air and surfaces and have third-party labs’ test data to prove that Pyure eliminates virus and bacteria on surfaces in large spaces in under an hour.

Secondly, Pyure is able to scale to the smallest and largest of spaces while proving we are treating those areas with sensors and controls. Pyure Technology® can meet the challenges of 100-cu-ft to over a million-cu-ft. Treatment of problem areas is ensured by controlling to preset points and modulating hydroxyl output based on the needs of the space. Ionizers are left to run and don’t understand if a school is now occupied or not, if the smoke or odor problem is growing, or if VOCs are building up because more people are now back in the office. Pyure handles all of these scenarios.

This combination of technology and controls creates a much more energy-efficient answer with Pyure. Where more ventilation is required pulling in outdoor air to dilute the building of virus and bacteria loads because ionizers don’t treat the air and surfaces in occupied space as well, more energy-consuming ventilation is needed. Using Pyure will offer you the opportunity to maintain your current ventilation and filtration controls strategy, in an energy efficient way, while improving virus, bacteria, VOC, smoke, and odor reduction.

Let’s review efficacy results and how they are derived.

Some ionizer companies have used small test chambers to garner the efficacy results they seek. When an ionization system is tested in a 1-square-foot space, an unrealistic effect is created with high concentrations of ions – often 50 to 100 times higher than in a full-sized room. The size of this testing area does not account for real-world conditions such as in a room. When testing is conducted in a real-world size test chamber, actual efficacy results are revealed. Adding to the problem is that testing is often performed on a surrogate virus and not the actual virus you’re concerned about, such as SARS-CoV-2.

Pyure holds itself to the highest standard testing protocols possible. For example, our testing against the SARS-CoV-2 virus is performed in a testing environment replicating a real-world setting. Our test chamber is 1,280-cubic-feet, which is approximate to a classroom or boardroom. Our testing utilized the actual SARS-CoV-2 virus. In these realistic testing conditions, our purifiers achieved >99% reduction of airborne virus in 20 minutes and were beyond detection in 80 minutes. It is proven that COVID-19 is transmitted through aerosols, so Pyure’s airborne reduction efficacy offers confidence in specifying your next job. See our third-party test results.

A few more benefits.

  • Surface Sanitization – Pyure’s mechanism of action means that its sanitizing agents land on surfaces and break down lingering pathogens.
  • Safe to use in occupied spaces – Pyure can safely run with people, plants and animals. Our toxicology study can be reviewed here.
  • Eliminates odors and VOCs – hydroxyls breakdown VOC, smoke and mildew – ionizers and filtration systems do not offer these features.
  • Disease Control & Prevention – Reduction in the transmission of the COVID-19 virus, cold and flu

How is Pyure installed?

Great news. A Pyure system easily replaces an ionizer. Once the ionizer is removed, a Pyure device installs in-line next to the HVAC system. No remodeling or reworking plans are required. Connect with us for our full specification.
